Background of the Study: Grief is a complex emotional response to loss, often accompanied by feelings of sadness, anger, and despair. For families who experience the death of a loved one, especially in the context of terminal illness, the emotional impact can be profound. In Taraba State, many families face difficulties in coping with the death of a family member, particularly those who have received hospice or palliative care (Okoh et al., 2024). Nurses, who are often intimately involved in the care of patients in the terminal stages, play a critical role in supporting bereaved families through grief counseling.
Nurse-led grief counseling provides emotional support to bereaved families, helping them to process their grief and cope with their loss (Smith & Jones, 2025). Nurses can offer a range of counseling services, from one-on-one conversations to family support groups, ensuring that families have access to emotional resources during this difficult time. However, despite its importance, the availability and effectiveness of nurse-led grief counseling services in Taraba State remain under-researched. Cultural attitudes towards grief and bereavement, as well as limited training for nurses, may hinder the effectiveness of grief counseling interventions (Agboola et al., 2023).
This study aims to evaluate the effect of nurse-led grief counseling on the emotional well-being of bereaved families in Taraba State, with a focus on improving coping strategies and reducing long-term psychological distress.
Statement of the Problem: Grief can have lasting emotional and psychological effects on individuals, particularly in the case of the loss of a loved one to a terminal illness. In Taraba State, many families do not receive adequate support in coping with their grief, which can result in prolonged emotional distress. This study will examine the effectiveness of nurse-led grief counseling in improving the emotional well-being of bereaved families, addressing gaps in the current care model.
