Background of the Study: Grief is a complex emotional response to loss, often accompanied by feelings of sadness, anger, and despair. For families who experience the death of a loved one, especially in the context of terminal illness, the emotional impact can be profound. In Taraba State, many families face difficulties in coping with the death of a family member, particularly those who have received hospice or palliative care (Okoh et al., 2024). Nurses, who are often intimately involved in the care of patients in the terminal stages, play a critical role in supporting bereaved families through grief counseling.

Nurse-led grief counseling provides emotional support to bereaved families, helping them to process their grief and cope with their loss (Smith & Jones, 2025). Nurses can offer a range of counseling services, from one-on-one conversations to family support groups, ensuring that families have access to emotional resources during this difficult time. However, despite its importance, the availability and effectiveness of nurse-led grief counseling services in Taraba State remain under-researched. Cultural attitudes towards grief and bereavement, as well as limited training for nurses, may hinder the effectiveness of grief counseling interventions (Agboola et al., 2023).

This study aims to evaluate the effect of nurse-led grief counseling on the emotional well-being of bereaved families in Taraba State, with a focus on improving coping strategies and reducing long-term psychological distress.

Statement of the Problem: Grief can have lasting emotional and psychological effects on individuals, particularly in the case of the loss of a loved one to a terminal illness. In Taraba State, many families do not receive adequate support in coping with their grief, which can result in prolonged emotional distress. This study will examine the effectiveness of nurse-led grief counseling in improving the emotional well-being of bereaved families, addressing gaps in the current care model.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the effect of nurse-led grief counseling on the emotional well-being of bereaved families in Taraba State.
  2. To evaluate the coping mechanisms of families who have received nurse-led grief counseling in Taraba State.
  3. To identify barriers to the effective delivery of grief counseling services by nurses in Taraba State.

Research Questions:

  1. How does nurse-led grief counseling affect the emotional well-being of bereaved families in Taraba State?
  2. What coping mechanisms are promoted through nurse-led grief counseling for bereaved families in Taraba State?
  3. What barriers do nurses face in providing effective grief counseling to bereaved families in Taraba State?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Bereaved families who receive nurse-led grief counseling exhibit improved emotional well-being compared to those who do not receive such counseling.
  2. The implementation of nurse-led grief counseling programs will reduce long-term psychological distress among bereaved families in Taraba State.
  3. Cultural beliefs and lack of training are significant barriers to the effectiveness of nurse-led grief counseling in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on evaluating the effect of nurse-led grief counseling on bereaved families in Taraba State healthcare facilities. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data from families and difficulty measuring long-term emotional well-being.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Grief counseling: A therapeutic process designed to help individuals cope with the emotional effects of losing a loved one, typically offered by healthcare professionals such as nurses.
  • Emotional well-being: The overall emotional state of an individual, including aspects such as happiness, mental health, and the ability to cope with stress and loss.
  • Nurse-led grief counseling: Counseling services provided by nurses to bereaved families, focusing on emotional support, coping strategies, and mental health care.
